Colour characters

Sort household items into their colour characters


Details:

  • All ages

  • Time: 10 minutes

  • Learning Outcome: To recognize colour characters in a variety of household objects and arrange these objects according to their character.

  • Colour Concepts: Colour and hue are not the same.

Materials:

  • A collection of 10-20 household objects belonging to the same hue family.

  • Corresponding vivid, pale, muted and dark tiles from the associated hue family/families in the physical sorting set.

Instructions:

  • Collect 10-20 items around your house from the same hue family. Make sure to find muted, dark and pale examples, as well as vivid items.

  • Spread out the items to cover your work area (see Figure 1).

  • Use the two vivid tiles of the adjacent hue families to ‘bookend’ the collection.

  • Arrange the items between the two vivid tiles, according to variation of hue from one tile to the other (See Figure 2).

  • Lay out the pale, muted and dark tiles from the same hue family, and arrange your item according to their colour characters (See Figure 3).

  • Find the item that is the closest match to each of your vivid, pale, muted and dark tiles (See Figure 4).
