Munker-White illusion
White’s illusion demonstrated with achromatic colours.
An illusion which uses bands of colour, where the lightness/value of a colour is shifted, due to the surrounding context. Note that this illusion, also known as colour assimilation, appears similar to simultaneous contrast, but it is not the same effect.
Example (achromatic): White’s illusion uses grey areas interspersed within black and white stripes. The perceived lightness/value of the grey shifts, depending on the surrounding areas.
Example (chromatic): The Munker-White illusion below uses coloured areas interspersed within black and white stripes. Note how neighbouring colours influence each other. Stripes may produce shifts in any of the colour attributes.
