Living in Colour EXERCISE
Details:
Ages: 5-99
Time: Could be an extended project, gathering colours over longer periods of time
Learning Outcome: Notice and describe colour preferences

Materials:
Camera/phone/tablet
Sketchbook (paper or digital)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Document the colours around you by taking photos. You will create your personal colour palette, and create a self-portrait using these colours. Gather images of the following colours:
Your skin colours. Try comparing of the colours from different parts of your body, like your hands, the inside of your forearm, your knees, your cheek
Your hair colour
Your eye colour
2-3 pieces of your favourite clothing
2-3 or your favourite colours
2-3 or your favourite foods
2-3 colours in your bedroom
Create a photo-collage of your personal colour palette.
Name and describe the colours you have collected in your collage. What is their hue family and character?
Compare your colour personal colour palette with your classmates.

How do your personal colour palettes compare to your classmates? Are their similarities in hue families and/or characters, or does everyone have a different set of colours?
Are the colours in your collage related in any way? (e.g. all pale or muted; same hue family)
Can you give names to your colours?
Are there any colours not part of your collection?

Do a self-portrait
Take a photo of your face.
Enlarge the photo to 8x10 size.
Cut the photo lengthwise in half.
Place half of your photo on the left side of your page. Use the other half to complete your self portrait. Choose colours from the colours you have gathered in your personal colour palette to complete your self portrait. Note that you can use any of the colours – you do not have to try and do a realistic portrait of the colours in your face. Instead, use the colours in your personal palette.
Try to use all the colours in your personal palette, and cover the whole page.
