Core Concepts
21st Century Colour Literacy

The Colour Literacy Project re-frames colour education to align with 21st century challenges and opportunities. From this updated perspective, we start with seeing, noticing and describing all the variations of colours around us. As we build our visual vocabulary, and become attuned to all the colours that surround us, we create a strong foundation for our colour journey.

The Colour Literacy Project is structured around four cornerstones for a state-of-the-art foundation of colour knowledge. The four cornerstones include core concepts related to:

  • Experiencing Colours

  • Describing Colours

  • Perceiving Colours

  • Working with Colours

The core concepts in each of the cornerstones are described below along with links to Fundamental Info and Common Misconceptions pages. See also the Outline of the Fundamentals and Misconceptions.

We are currently beta-testing a scaffolded framework of key exercises that explore the core concepts, cover the fundamentals and, hopefully, dispel common colour misconceptions. See Beta-Testing 2025-2026.

The overarching framework of knowledge adapted by the CLP encompasses many disciplines, and sets the stage for acquiring higher order, discipline-specific knowledge. Please also read our FAQ, for additional background on our approach.
